Islam is a religion originating with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. Islam is the second largest religion in the world. The central concept of Islam is the oneness of God. The Quran (sometimes spelled Koran)is the holy book of the Muslims. The Arabic word Islam means surrender or submission. God is called Allah and a person who follows the teachings of Islam is called a Muslim. Muslims live in every country throughout the world. Islam is a faith and a culture. Formal acts of worship called the Five Pillars of Islam provide the framework for a Muslim's life. The five pillars are shahada, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage. There are three historic divisions in Islam- the Sunnis, the Shiah, and the Imami. The symbol of Islam is a crescent and star.
