West Virginia was part of Virginia until the Civil War when Virginia joined the Confederacy and the northwestern part of the state sided with the Union. West Virginia became the 35th state in the Union on June 20th, 1863. The state capital is Charleston and the state motto is Mountaineers are Always Free.
