Knights were gentlemen and soldiers of a certain social class who banded together in military groups, called orders, during the Middle Ages to defend a king or a lord and his land against enemies. The chief British orders of Knighthood were the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Thistle, the Order of the Bath, the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, and the Royal Victorian Order. The wife of a Knight is called a Lady.
